The number of children under 5 hospitalized with Covid-19 has reached a record high, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday. This is partly because kids in this age group aren't eligible for vaccines, and the latest Omicron variant is explosively contagious. There are also fears that Omicron -- which seems to largely affect the upper airway -- may cause more severe cases in little ones, who have smaller airways.

Opinion: Why it's impossible for some people to follow Covid-19 guidelines

Over the past few weeks, people across the country have experienced the frustrations of demand for Covid-19 tests far exceeding supply. I can relate. After my son experienced a breakthrough Covid-19 case over the holidays, my wife and I scoured our area for at-home rapid antigen tests and PCR test appointments. Neither was available at local pharmacies. We managed to secure testing appointments at our local YMCA, only to have them canceled due to lack of staffing. We then got in a line at a state-run testing site in a sports arena. Two-and-a-half hours later we had our tests, and three days later my wife and I had our results, which came back negative.

NASA's first Artemis moon mission will have a virtual astronaut: Amazon's Alexa

NASA's Artemis 1 mission, slated for take off as soon as this March, aims to send an Orion spacecraft around the moon. The cabin will be largely empty, save for an a interactive tablet that has been dubbed "Callisto," which will sit propped up to face an astronaut mannequin. Callisto is essentially a touch-screen device that features reconfigured versions of Alexa, Amazon's voice assistant, and Cisco's teleconferencing platform WebEx.
