Vaccine hesitancy in pregnant people drives rise in Covid hospitalizations

Pregnant people who develop Covid-19 symptoms risk emergency complications and other problems with their pregnancies, according to two new studies. And pregnancy alone places people at an increased risk for severe illness and death. But despite these risks, pregnant people remain some of the most vaccine-hesitant populations in the United States, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Only 33% of pregnant people between 18-49 are fully vaccinated, according to CDC data from October 2, a figure dwarfed by rates seen in the rest of the population eligible for the vaccine. Around 66% of people aged 12 and older are now fully inoculated in the US, with nearly 77% of that same age group having at least one shot. Vaccine rates are even lower among pregnant Hispanic or Latino (28%) and Black people (17.4%) -- minority groups who also experience unacceptably poor maternal health outcomes, including disproportionately high rates of death related to pregnancy or childbirth.

Among these, there were 22 deaths in August alone.

"Dopesick" is a major undertaking, exploring the opioid crisis from multiple angles, including the ground-level carnage inflicted by OxyContin addiction, Purdue Pharma's inner workings and the government personnel seeking to combat it. Scattered in places, in its totality it's an engrossing eight-part series, made more so by Purdue's bankruptcy proceedings and the Sackler family's efforts to avoid additional consequences.

What we owe health workers

Those on the pandemic's frontlines -- health and care workers, including nurses -- risk their lives every day to treat their patients. They face high risk of infection with Covid-19; the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated in May, almost certainly a substantial underestimate, that a stunning 115,000 or more had already died from Covid-19. By July, the death toll was estimated at 200 each and every day since the pandemic began.

Review: 'Diana: The Musical' brings the stage to Netflix, but 'The Crown' hangs over its head

After splendid presentations of "Hamilton" and "Come From Away" brought theater into homes via other streamers, Netflix adds to the act with a bonus, offering "Diana: The Musical" prior to its stage debut. But other productions, including Netflix's own The Crown," loom large over this vibrant but oft-told tale, dutifully recounting Princess Diana's story through a less-than-memorable assortment of songs.
