Memphis bridge's unusual design puts it at risk for future problems

I'm an engineer who was part of the team that worked from 2015 to 2017 on developing a system to monitor the seismic performance of the Hernando de Soto Bridge that carries Interstate 40 across the Mississippi River at Memphis. Republican Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Matt Gaetz of Florida have a lot in common. As each lawmaker increasingly finds themselves at the center of controversy, they often go out of their way to show public support for each other, raising concerns about the message they're projecting for the future of a party searching for its footing in the wake of the 2020 election.

What Covid disaster in India shows about the future

Millions of people around the world have now seen images of the desperate situation in parts of India as infection rates exceed 300,000 per day. Reports point to a desperate shortage of oxygen, a double mutant strain and images of bodies laying on funeral biers on sidewalks, as crematoriums become overwhelmed -- even in the capital New Delhi.
