The war that we should all agree is worth fighting

Fifty years ago, America was bitterly divided. The war in Vietnam was grinding on, claiming nearly as many American troops' lives in 1971 alone as we lost in two decades in Afghanistan. Domestic terrorist attacks were common; the FBI said there were about five bombings a day in the US. That's each day.

Tom Hanks is alone again in 'Finch,' with only a dog and robot for company

Apple TV+ must really like Tom Hanks, with "Finch" representing the second movie featuring the actor the service scooped up during the pandemic. Like "Greyhound," this one is in a modest affair that would likely have been hard-pressed to make waves in theaters, casting Hanks in a last-man-on-Earth scenario that's part "Cast Away," part "WALL-E."

Vaccine hesitancy in pregnant people drives rise in Covid hospitalizations

Pregnant people who develop Covid-19 symptoms risk emergency complications and other problems with their pregnancies, according to two new studies. And pregnancy alone places people at an increased risk for severe illness and death. But despite these risks, pregnant people remain some of the most vaccine-hesitant populations in the United States, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Only 33% of pregnant people between 18-49 are fully vaccinated, according to CDC data from October 2, a figure dwarfed by rates seen in the rest of the population eligible for the vaccine. Around 66% of people aged 12 and older are now fully inoculated in the US, with nearly 77% of that same age group having at least one shot. Vaccine rates are even lower among pregnant Hispanic or Latino (28%) and Black people (17.4%) -- minority groups who also experience unacceptably poor maternal health outcomes, including disproportionately high rates of death related to pregnancy or childbirth.

Opinion: How to protect pregnant people from Covid

Data released this week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show there have been more than 128,000 confirmed Covid-19 cases among people who are pregnant, including more than 22,000 hospitalizations and 180 deaths since the pandemic began. Among these, there were 22 deaths in August alone.

Move leaves Congress without a clear plan

Senate Republicans blocked a House-passed bill to suspend the debt limit and avert a government shutdown from advancing in the Senate. The move comes after Republicans had insisted that Democrats act alone to address the debt limit and leaves Congress without a clear plan to keep the government open with the threat of a potential shutdown looming by the end of the week.

House prepares to vote on bill to avert shutdown and suspend debt limit

Democratic leaders are hoping to vote on Tuesday on legislation to prevent a government shutdown at the end of the month and suspend the nation's borrowing limit, setting up a showdown with Republicans who insist Democrats should act alone to stave off a looming debt crisis.
